Literally disgusted with all the litter lining our roads in our beautiful town, I set out to pick up trash in a ball gown every day for a week. One month following "Peace by Piece", there lay more trash on the same route. I made this 24/7 litter guard in hopes that folks would be more respectful of our land and refrain from tossing. This litterguard was posted on Jacob Miller rd. and stolen by the end of his first shift. I called the local Newspaper to post an ad for a reward leading to the Litterguard, and the Litterguard ended up on the front page of the paper! My cousin said, "It's Friday, someone probably took it to the bar with them."
Following "Piece by Peace," I realized I wasn't such an oddball after all. I found other people who, like me, have a passion for trashion and sometimes in fashion!!!!
Picking up litter dressed up is fun and attracts attention!
Solid Waste Advisory Committee
This is my second year serving on the SWAC for District !. I enjoy learning about what happens to our waste, and meeting the people who do this important work. I also like being a part of the conversation when it has to do with policy and education.
New programs are cropping up! During Covid, my proposal for A.I.R.E. (Artist -in -resident and Education) program at the Jeff Co. Transfer Station was approved. I quickly invited artists I know with a passion for trashion to form a planning committee and A.I.R.E. was born. After a year and a half of contemplation and planning including a sumemer pilot project, we hosted our first artist: Carol Rashawnna Williams, this past year we hosted local sculptress, Margie McDonald, and the call is out for 2025! We are now a part of Local 20/20's Beyond Waste Action Group.
Please go to aireatthetransferstation for more information.
My bed project was a performative piece attempting to demonstrate what Brian Murphy calls, "psychology of inertia" the state of being so overwhelmed by everything that you can't act.
With the help of a very devoted committee, Port Townsend's Repair Cafe debut was a smash hit! Pun intended. The event took place Feb 29th 2020. 125 people showed up with their broken items hoping they would get a second chance in life. Check out repaircafeporttownsend.com
Update: During Covid, I passed the leadership torch to Mandi Johnson, a Americorp educator I met while docenting at the Marine Science Center. I was happy that a younger, brilliant person wanted to take it on! With the help of Laura Tucker, Mandi applied and received a PPG grant so she could work at organizing more of these events in our County. Most of the same committee has followed Mandi and are committed to the art of repair: Carol Cummins, Janet Welch, Mark Cooper, and myself. We are happy to help. Check out Jeff CO Repair- now a part of the Marine Science Center.
